Biotreatment Soil Media (BSM) and Biotreatment Wood Mulch (BWM) are important elements of a bioretention system. The BSM specification was created by BASMAA (now known as BAMSC) and was last updated in 2016. Since that time, SCVURPPP and regional partners have created several related guidance documents and checklists including the following:

- SCVURPPP BSM Verification Checklist (SCVURPPP 2021)
The BWM specification was created in 2021. In 2025, BWM suppliers were added to a new combined BSM/BWM supplier list.
